Work-Life Balance, What's That!

You've put years of hard work into your career but now you're feeling underappreciated, stuck in a ever repeating cycle, and questioning, “Is this all there is?”

You think about finding another job, but endless interviews and starting again doesn't interest you. It would only be the same thing somewhere else, a short term fix.

Ideally you'd be done with working all together, you've slogged away for long enough. You deserve to get some time back to do what you want to do, right!

The trouble is you're earning a decent living now, you've got bills to pay, you can't just walk away from the stability. So how can you replace that income?

In past generations you just had to stick it out, no matter if you're unhappy, you picked a career and that's what you did until retirement. Now there are options to escape the 9-5 grind, millions of people are earing a living online. Work whenever and wherever you want, no time to stick to and no boss to report to.

There are plenty of side hustles out there but if want to build something long lasting, that can really replace your income then an online business is the way to go. Selling digital products, offering online services, affiliate marketing, content creation, freelancing, or running an e-commerce store.

And the best part is that you can start while you keep you day job,  it seemed impossible, but I did it—and so can you. It wasn’t easy, and didn’t happen overnight, but with the right guidance, hard work and consistency, I grew a thriving business while keeping the stability of my day job.

The main obstacle to changing my career was my my own fear, of losing my income, of failure, of being too old to start over. When in reality none of that mattered, the program I followed showed that I didn’t need all the answers. The ethos is - Start small, learn as you go and do it while keeping your day job. That reduced my stress massively.

I was a finance business partner, stuck in jobs that drained rather than fulfilled me. Here's how I built an online business while keeping my stability

In this article, I’ll share the lessons I learned, the hurdles I faced, and the steps I took to make it all possible.

My Story - Finance Business Partner to Business Owner

By my mid-40s, I was worn out.  I hated the job that I used to love, dreaded days in the office and the resentment was growing. I was missing important moments with my family and struggling to keep up physically—everything always felt more urgent than taking care of myself. I began to question if it was worth the effort—working with no time for the life I really wanted.

I felt pressure to “stick it out” in the career I had built, I couldn’t walk away from a stable income and great benefits. But deep down, I wasn’t happy. I knew this couldn’t continue but I had no idea what to do.

I went down the usual route and searched for jobs in finance, things I had already done, after all, office jobs are all I've known, but that didn't motivate me, I knew i couldn't face another 20 years doing the same. After exploring a bunch of side gigs I hadn’t found a viable solution, until a friend suggested online business. At first, I dismissed it as something for others, not someone like me—no huge social media following, not a tech master. I didn’t know where to begin, or how to transition without risking everything I had worked for, but the more i thought about it, I realised I couldn’t stay in this rut forever.

After a lot of searching I found Launch You and their program that was aimed at people like me, I watched a video from the founder and it was like he was talking directly to me, he addressed all of my issues with my job and the fears I had of starting something new. After that I was hooked.

Through the video I learned that starting small, with the right tools and strategy, was the key. And most importantly I didn’t need to know it all upfront, and I didn’t need to quit my job immediately to get started.

With the right mindset, support, and a clear plan, I was able to start living the life I had been missing. If I can do it, you can too.

What Is an Online Business?

An online business is any venture that primarily operates over the internet. This could include selling digital products, offering online services, affiliate marketing, content creation, freelancing, or running an e-commerce store. The key benefit? Flexibility. You can work from anywhere, set your own hours, and scale your income without needing to trade more hours for more pay

How Does an Online Business Work?

Here’s how it helped me solve the problem of working long hours and missing life:

  1. Defined My Skills and Interests – I started with what I already knew and enjoyed, making the process more authentic and sustainable.
  2. Picked a Scalable Model – I chose affiliate marketing because it didn’t require inventory or a heavy upfront investment.
  3. Built a Simple Website – With easy tools and templates, I created a professional-looking site in days, not months.
  4. Created Helpful Content – I shared honest, valuable advice based on my experiences, attracting people with similar problems.
  5. Monetised the Traffic – Through affiliate links and simple digital offers, I began to generate income, even when I wasn’t actively working.

This setup allowed me to earn enough to reduce my hours at my day job and spend more time with my family. It was a game changer.

Is Online Business Right For You

If you're someone frustrated by working long hours and missing out on life’s important moments, and you've already tried searching "finance careers" or new "finance jobs" but realised that another job isn't going to solve your problem, then exploring an online business might be the shift you need.

This approach gave me the belief to finally do something that interested and motivated me, without compromising on income.

  • You don't need to have all the answers straight away
  • You don't need to invest all of your savings
  • You don't need to quit your job to get started.

I now work fewer hours at my day job; I can get out on my bike when the kids are at school, and I have time in the evenings to spend with my family. I aim to quit the day job by the end of the year.
